10 week woes

Today officially marks the start of week 10. I know that may not seem like a big deal - I'm only a quarter of the way there, and not even out of the first trimester yet - but it feels huge to me. Seeing those double digits makes these little ones feel all the more real to me. A few other things that are currently making it feel real:

Bloating.

Oh yes. The bloating. I've officially reached the point where I literally can no longer suck in my stomach. I'm not actually showing, just really, incredibly bloated, and my flab is just hanging out there for the world to see (as a side note, it's terribly depressing that the bloated girl in the photo is less pudgy than I was even pre-bloat). I even bought new yoga pants over the weekend to accommodate my supersized stomach. In fact, I'm wearing them right now, and it's pure bliss to not feel a constricting waistband around my stomach!

Nausea.

Yup. Still nauseated. It had faded away for most of last week, and I was hoping that maybe it was gone for good - but nope, it showed up stronger than ever yesterday, and today has been nothing short of miserable. Since ginger does nothing but give me rank burps, the only thing that helps are sour candies (I'm eating Sours Squirms because that's what's available here, but I've had friends in the USA recommend Sour Patch Kids). I still haven't actually thrown up a single time, but I'm not sure that feeling like I'm about to vomit 24/7 is much better. Oddly, the only time I don't feel sick is while I'm eating. Which wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't for the next thing...

Food aversions.

See that photo above? I'm feeling sick just looking at it. No kidding. This has probably been the most difficult part of this pregnancy so far - the constantly shifting food aversions. For weeks, virtually all I could eat was hamburger patties. Then last week, all I wanted was chicken. Now I don't want either. In fact, NOTHING sounds good right now - and that's not an exaggeration. I literally cannot think of a single thing that doesn't make me want to throw up.

I know that all of these things will be worth it, and I would never for a second say that I'd never do this again based solely on how miserable I'm feeling right now - I absolutely would do this again for these babies. I have to say though, this nausea is really wearing me down - does anyone have any tips, other than the sour candy?

  1. If you look back at my posts from the first tri my issues were virtually the same! It does get better.

Around week 15 my food aversions and nausea all but went away and my belly "popped" so I actually looked more pregnant than chubby. In fact, for a bigger gal, having the bump is sort of liberating because I cannot suck it in if I tried and therefore I am okay with letting it all hang out. At least it's firm and round and not jiggly and flabby like a chubby belly would be in a fitted top. LOL!

Hang in there...in a few short weeks, you should be turning the corner and be in the second tri!

Oh, and when nothing sounded good, fruit smoothies made with plain yogurt did the trick. They were cold and tart (I made mine with pineapple or lemonade juice as a base since that took care of the queasies...and added frozen strawberries, etc.) I think I lived on yogurt and fruit and bread and cheese (grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, bagels and cream cheese, etc.)for the first 15 weeks I was pregnant!

  2. I hate the taste of ginger as well, but I found Canada Dry Ginger Ale (they have cranberry and raspberry flavours too) has real ginger in it, and it was my little miracle worker. Until now, I am entering my eleventh week, and I can't eat anything! I have tried everything, and even the things that sound good at first make me gag when i get them near my nose and mouth... I'm basically relying on Gatorade to give me a small amount of energy to get through the day while I try to find something that is appealing...

I hope you feel better soon!!!

  3. I'm in nauseaville as well right now so I know how you feel. The sour candy does work well but after a while, I felt too sugared up so I started looking for alternatives too. I thought ginger wasn't good for pg (somewhere I read that it's an emmenagogue) but the ginger ale really helps with nausea (so I gave in and am drinking it--the ones made with real ginger too). Eating oranges helps me a little (but not for very long) but mainly lying down or sleeping is the best cure for me. I'm also doing grilled cheese sandwiches since I'm unable to hold down very much! Well, at 10 wks, I hope it's almost over for you soon! I think I still have another 4+ weeks of this torture!

  4. Congrats on 10 weeks! I found ice chips really helped with my nausea or jolly ranchers. We have a fantastic homeopath at one of our pharmacies - she gave me some anti-nausea meds that helped alot. Send me an e-mail if you want the name.
I was really bloated around 10 weeks too, I even caved and bought a pair of maternity pants for work, but at about week 12 it went away and I was back to normal for awhile.
Hope you start feeling better soon!

  5. Double digits are big news! Congrats! I haven't been really nauseous, but I do have a hard time deciding what to eat. Plain things work well for me, and most recently, it's been baked potatoes. Depending on my tummy, I can eat them plain or jazz them up with all the fixings, so I haven't tired of them yet!
