Baby's First Rock Concert

A couple of weeks ago, in the throes of first trimester exhaustion, I braved a late-night excursion on a Wednesday to go see my very favorite band in concert. I've been a Collective Soul fan since 1997, when I saw them in the lineup at a mega-concert called "Rockfest '97". Since that fateful day, I've seen them 7 or 8 times over the years, and have remained a true and loyal fan. So when they announced they were coming to town to perform at the House of Blues, I immediately bought tickets. At the time, I wasn't even pregnant, so I had no idea that my baby's first concert would be none other than my very favorite band!

(L to R: Lead Guitarist Joel Kosche, Singer Ed Roland, Bass Guitarist Will Turpin, and Rhythm Guitarist Dean Roland)
I went with two good friends of mine, and after dinner at a nearby restaurant, we made our way to the show. Even though we arrived just as the first opening act was taking the stage, we were still able to snake our way through the crowd and get standing spots right up near the stage.

Even though I knew this experience would be fine for the baby at just 11 weeks, I still found myself very conscious of the fact that it wasn't just me at the show - that I was responsible for another life inside of me. Fortunately the crowd was very tame (as I knew it would be at a CS show), but when a catfight erupted just a couple of people over from us, I did find myself inching away out of protectiveness. Security broke up the fight very quickly, and the rest of the show went by without incident.

It was an amazing concert, and it felt kinda cool to know that I was bringing my baby along, even though he or she will of course have no recollection at all of the event! They even played a rather symbolic song, one that the lead singer wrote when his son was born years ago. It's called Tremble for My Beloved, and here are the lyrics:

The hour has begun
Your eyes have now opened

To a world where madness craves
To a world where hope's enslaved
Oh, I'll tremble for my love always

Your windows, opened wide
Your innocence takes flight

To a world where madness craves
To a world where hope's enslaved
Oh, I'll tremble for my love always

It's a world where madness craves
It's a world where hopes enslaved
Oh, I tremble for my love always

It's a world where madness craves
It's a world where hopes enslaved
Yeah, I tremble for you, love, always

If you're a Twilight fan, you'll recognize the song from the scene where Edward saves Bella from being hit by the car in the school parking lot. I've always wanted to play this song for my future child, so the fact that they played it at this show was really exciting.

In other baby news, we have our first appointment at the birth center tomorrow. We'll finally get to hear our baby's heartbeat, and I'm super excited! We even have the day off (for an unrelated reason), so I'm sitting pretty today in the middle of another three-day weekend.

  1. Enjoy the heartbeat appointment!!

And I still think you have license to say to the kid "the first concert you ever went to was Collective Soul!!" and it'll be true!
